- Increase your number of blocks (NB parameter) and your performance should
- increase (to a point). Your CPU speed and SCSI bus speed can affect
- performance as well. If you have a slow SCSI controller then increasing
- the number of blocks won't do much except waste memory.
-
- I don't know about DATs, but on my streamer you can hear it writing to
- the tape, then it will backup for a second, then continue. This sounds
- kind of like Beeeeeeeeeeeep, Bweep, Beeeeeeeeeeeep, Bweep,
- Beeeeeeeeeeeep, Bweep, etc. Each time it backs up its finished writing
- the number of blocks you have set with the NB parameter (think of it
- like pausing to take a breath). The more blocks it writes at one time,
- the fewer times it has to back up. Again DATs may operate differently.
-
- A drawback is the more blocks you specify, the more tape is wasted at the
- end of an archive (since its padding with blank blocks) and more memory
- becomes dedicated to the TAPE: driver task. If you are only putting a
- couple of archives on each tape then this becomes a non-issue.
-
- On my Calipher CP-150 drive I use NB-2000, which on my 14mhz '020 powered
- 500 gives me about 5 meg per minute (which I think is around 2/3 of the
- Calipher's rated maximum).
